The John Duval ‘Annexus’ Mataro is a limited-production wine crafted from old-vine Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) sourced from select Barossa Valley vineyards. This small-batch release reflects John Duval’s expertise in highlighting the depth, elegance, and complexity of this underappreciated variety.
Tasting Notes:
Color: Deep ruby with garnet hues.
Aroma: Fragrant and complex, offering dark berry fruits, violets, earthy spice, and hints of black olive. Subtle undertones of smoked meats, dried herbs, and star anise add depth.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with a silky yet structured mouthfeel. Juicy blueberry and blackberry flavors are complemented by savory spice, leather, and a fine, mineral-driven finish. Balanced acidity and firm but polished tannins create a long, lingering aftertaste.
Winemaking & Vineyard:
Sourced from some of the Barossa Valley’s oldest, low-yielding Mataro vines, contributing to its intensity and complexity.
Fermented in small open-top fermenters, ensuring gentle extraction of color and tannin.
Aged in seasoned French oak puncheons for 15–18 months, maintaining freshness while enhancing structure.
Food Pairing:
This elegant and structured Mataro pairs beautifully with:
Chargrilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic
Slow-cooked beef brisket with a rich jus
Wild mushroom risotto
Hard-aged cheeses, such as Manchego or Parmesan
Cellaring Potential:
The John Duval ‘Annexus’ Mataro has excellent cellaring potential of 10–15 years, evolving with greater complexity, softer tannins, and deeper tertiary notes over time.
